Working with Angels When You’re Demon-Allied Part 1: So… This Is Awkward.

Have you ever wanted to work with angels but thought: “hey, that’d be way too awkward”? Or maybe you really need help in your life, and you think an angel would help you if only you didn’t smell like demon? Be it because you’re a demonolator, demonkin, or just someone who hangs out with demons for your own personal reasons1 , there are many reasons why a person would view angels with some trepidation. For over ten years I’ve been working with demons, and since the start of that, my spiritual life has centered on demons. When I first came in contact with angels, I was honestly pretty scared. It took years to build up relations to where I am today, a mutually respectful relationship where I’m comfortable with having conversations with angels, doing magical works with their participation, and taking their advice.

When angel-work is brought up with some demon-aligned people, they usually express suspicion and outright fear of angels. This is understandable. It’s hard to tell people, in just a brief flash of conversation or a random reblog, how it could be possible for them to work with angels in their own spiritual lives without causing some angel-demon battle or going against the precepts of their own spirituality if they’re not of an Abrahamic faith. Especially since most of the angelology resources out there are either very religious in nature or are ceremonialist materials that position demons as lessers or pieces of one’s own consciousness. It’s not very welcoming for someone who hangs out with demons for fun or because they’re like family.

There are many reasons why a demon-aligned person would want to work with angels. Sometimes the relationship is a temporary seeking of protection until the person can get their situation under control. Sometimes it’s curiosity, a desire to work with angels in addition to what they already practice. You may be ready for a high-level education on spiritual, alchemical, or kabbalistic concepts. A demon you’re working with may already have a steady working relationship with an angel and invite you to become part of that, or has endorsed an angel as good to work with and wants you to try. Some people who are demonkin may have some angelic family ties they’d like to explore, depending on who they’re related to. Whatever your reasons, it’s possible to seek aid from angels, and it doesn’t have to require converting to a specific faith or renouncing your family/friends/patrons.

Just a note before we go on: at MPV we tend to focus loosely on Abrahamic pantheons so I’ll be talking about Abrahamic demons and angels in this series. I can’t speak with authority on working with other pantheons’ angels.
